Chapter 8: Four Degrees

Carrie's POV

Faye had a double shift on Monday, and the physical therapy clinic was forty minutes away.

I stood at her front window, looking at my phone and the bus map, and I did the math three times.

Then I texted Dean.

You can drive me to PT. You wait in the lobby. You don't come in the room.

He answered in under a minute.

Yes. Thank you. Yes.

He was in the driveway at nine, in a clean shirt, holding the passenger door open with one hand and my crutches in the other.

I climbed in without a word.

We did not talk for the first fifteen minutes.

At a red light on the highway, he said, "I took leave. Unpaid. Until you're through the knee."

"I heard."

"I'm not asking for anything."

"Good."

"I just wanted you to know."

I watched the foothills go by.

"Your bonus," I said.

"It's fine."

"It's a lot of money, Dean."

"It's fine," he said again, and he put his eyes back on the road.

The clinic was in a low brick building behind a pharmacy.

Dean parked, came around, and carried my bag while I swung across the lot on the crutches. Inside, he took a chair in the waiting room and picked up a magazine.

I went through the door marked Therapy.

The therapist was a tall woman in a gray polo with strong, freckled arms. She looked at my chart, looked at me, and said, "You're not out of shape."

"I'm sorry?"

"You think you are. It's all over your face. But your knee has a torn ligament and three ribs are healing. That's not out of shape. That's injured. We're going to work on injured."
