Chapter 16: The Challenge
They fought in the palace yard, because Vandeleur's wolves would not wait for dawn.
Two hundred of them filled the cobbles under torches, packed shoulder to shoulder, in the pack's black and silver.
I stood on the stair of the east wing in a cloak over my nightgown with Alaric's coat around my shoulders.
He stood behind me, one hand on the wall, with the grey thread still over his heart.
"You should be in bed," I said.
"I'll lie down when it's done."
The King had come out in his plain coat.
He did not give an order.
He only said, "Vandeleur's law. The Alpha answers a challenge in front of his pack."
Two guards brought Garrick up from the cells.
He walked into the torchlight with his burned hand bandaged and his collar open.
Wynne came across the yard from the guest wing in a fur wrap.
