Chapter 14: The Challenge Eve

Ronan's POV

The night before a Challenge, an Alpha is supposed to go over his strengths.

I sat at my father's desk with the lamp off and went over what I had done wrong.

I had sent her to bed alone every night but one and called it respect.

I had given her a year and called it a gift, when I knew it was a lie.

I had let Celia keep the pack kitchen for thirteen years and never asked what else she kept.

That was three wrongs, and I could pay for none of them by winning.

Someone knocked on the study door.

She had never once come in without knocking, and I had never once told her she had to.

"Come in," I said.

Nora came in barefoot, in one of my shirts, with her hair down.

She sat on the edge of the desk, close enough that her knee touched my arm.

"You're not sleeping," she said.

"At sundown tomorrow, a hundred wolves will watch my brother try to take this chair from me," I said.

"Your brother can barely hold a fork steady."

"My stepmother will not be holding the fork."

"Then she's the one I want to meet in that hall."

I opened the desk drawer and took out a small box that had sat at the back of it since the day my father died.

"This was his," I said. "It went to the Luna of this pack for four generations. My stepmother never wore it, because I kept it from her."

I took out the ring.

It was a plain band of old gold, worn thin on one side.

"I'm not asking you to put it on because of the mark," I said. "The mark's done. I'm asking because I want every wolf in that hall to see it on your hand."
