Chapter 26: Guest Right
On the second morning of guest-right, I pulled forty stakes out of the ford with a claw hammer.
The south sentry had come for us at first light, gray in the face, and walked us down to the creek.
Someone had been there in the night.
A line of pine stakes ran across the ford and up the east pasture, each one driven knee-deep, each with a green rag tied around the top.
Blackwater green.
Ronan stood at the water's edge with three elders and his hands at his sides.
He hadn't touched a single stake, and I could see what that cost him.
"A guest may not touch the pack's things," the eldest elder said, in a low, sour voice. "And no wolf may lay a hand on a guest's. The law cuts both ways."
"They're driven into our ground," Ronan said.
"Then the guest has already broken guest-right, and you can say so to the whole valley. And Satterfield will say you broke it first, by moving his property. And we will be at war by supper."
Boyd Satterfield came down the bank then, in his canvas coat, with six of his wolves behind him.
He looked at the stakes, and at us, and he did not look worried.
"A survey, Luna," he said, to me, not to Ronan. "A guest is allowed to look at what he's been promised."
"The deed's ash."
"The deed's a copy I haven't shown you."
I turned to the eldest elder.
"Whose ground is this?" I asked.
He blinked.
"It's the east pasture. It belongs to the pack."
"No. By the old law, who keeps it?"
His mouth moved, and something almost like a smile crossed it.
