Chapter 19: The Forged Email
By Sunday morning I was the most hated hotel critic in America.
It took about eleven hours.
The comments under my lobby videos went first.
"Fraud."
"She sold out her own job and cried about it on camera."
"Gold digger tried to marry into the Kinsellas and got caught."
The two hotels that had begged me to come emailed to say they'd reconsidered.
Dell sat on the couch with my laptop, typing furiously.
"What are you doing?"
"Replying."
"Del. Don't."
"I'm being very calm," she said. "I'm only calling them small-souled toads."
I took the laptop away.
I made coffee.
I read the email again on her phone. My address. His address. Nine fourteen.
The exact minute my login had opened the schedule, while I was in Chicago with my phone in a locker.
At four the black phone rang.
"I've seen it," Colm said.
"Everyone's seen it."
"What do you want to do?"
I looked at Dell, asleep on the couch with her mouth open and her hand still on my laptop.
"I'm going to answer it," I said. "In person. Tomorrow morning, nine o'clock, in the Guide's lobby. On camera. Where everybody who fired me has to walk past."
