Chapter 24: The Gala
I opened it with a butter knife.
A stiff gold-edged card slid out.
THE KINSELLA. ONE HUNDRED YEARS. THE CENTENNIAL GALA.
Friday, December twelfth. The Grand Ballroom. Seven o'clock. Black tie.
Tucked behind it was a smaller card, a place card, with a number on it.
Table one.
And on the back, in blue ink, in handwriting I'd seen on two years of birthday cards:
"Wear the green dress. Come see what you gave up. R."
Dell read it over my shoulder.
"I'm going to put that man in a stand mixer," she said.
"No, you're not."
"On low. Just for a while."
"He wants me at table one," I said. "Next to him. In front of four hundred people. So everyone can watch the girl who leaked it smile at him."
"So you're not going."
"I'm going."
Dell stared at me.
"In the green dress?"
"No," I said. "And not alone."
The forty met every night after service in the staff cafeteria, and the head housekeeper ran it like a fire drill.
"Nobody leaves a guest without towels," she said. "Not even for a revolution."
On Friday at six I stood in Dell's bathroom with my hair down.
