Chapter 18: The Offer
Two days before the Concours, the committee held a press preview at the track museum, and Vivian made sure she got the microphone.
Forty reporters stood in the main hall under the hanging cars.
Each restorer in the show had a photo board beside a table and a card with a name.
Mine held a picture of the Mustang in gray primer, with a card that said MARA TOLLAND, TOLLAND RESTORATION, CONCORD.
I had put on the black dress again because I owned one dress.
Cade stood a step behind me, in a jacket, with his hands in his pockets.
He had promised on the drive to say nothing unless I asked.
It was the hardest promise he had ever kept, and I could see it in his neck.
A woman from the committee tapped the microphone.
"Before the questions, our principal sponsor would like a word."
Vivian walked to the front in emerald green, with a leather folder under her arm and a smile for every camera.
"Thank you all," she said. "I want to address the rumors, because the people involved deserve better than gossip."
