Chapter 30: The Slow Morning

I woke on a Sunday in Zoe's bed with nowhere to be.

It was the first time in two months that I could say it.

It felt like a held breath finally letting go.

Grey winter light came through the long windows over the river.

The sheets were warm and smelled of her.

She lay on her side facing me with her head on her arm, awake, watching me wake.

"You snore," Zoe said.

"I do not."

"Faintly. Like a ship."

"My father was a pilot on the ore boats."

"Then it's inherited."

I reached out and ran my thumb along the line of her jaw.

She turned her face into my palm and kissed it.

"Nobody is calling," she said. "No grocer, no board, no Hallett."

"Bridger has been told that if he texts before noon, I'll sell the fern."

"That's cruel."

"I'm very cruel. Come here."

She pushed me onto my back and climbed over me, and the sheet slid off her shoulders and pooled at her waist.

In the grey light her skin was the color of warm olive oil.

I could see the places where my mouth had been the night before.
