Chapter 31: The Last Meeting
I chose a diner on Cicero Avenue, because nobody there had ever heard of Hallett Systems.
Braxton was already in the back booth when I came in, with a cup of coffee he hadn't touched.
He wore a flannel shirt and a grey coat that didn't fit him.
His hair had grown out an inch, dark at the roots, and the veneers looked wrong on a face with no tan.
"You came," he said.
"You said please."
He winced, and I sat across from him.
"I'm staying in my mother's guest room," Braxton said. "It has a quilt with ducks on it."
"Sounds restful."
"I wake up at four every morning. I lie there and think of things I should have said."
"Such as?"
"Such as what the nightly check was for."
I waited.
"I looked it up," he said. "After the board. A man at the library showed me."
"It's a page and a half. Every store gets counted before it's paid."
