Chapter 23: 200
The snow started at nine on Tuesday night, and by four on Wednesday morning the Brooklyn track was white from fence to fence.
I stood at the edge of the pit lane in a borrowed parka, holding a shovel.
Two miles of oval lay white in front of me.
Eleven inches of snow lay on the straight.
The track was booked until noon, and it was the only day anyone would rent it to us before the show.
Marty came up beside me holding a thermos.
"Well," he said. "That's a lot of white."
"I can see that."
"I'm only saying it for the record."
"We have twelve shovels."
"We have twelve shovels and no hope."
Headlights swung across the snow from the entrance road.
Then more headlights, a long line of them, coming through the gate with yellow lights turning on top.
The first truck was a flatbed with a plow blade bolted to its front.
The woman driving it had a burn scar on her chin.
She leaned out of the cab and shouted over the engine.
"Foundry's closed today," she said. "Thirty of us and three trucks. Where do you want it?"
