Chapter 19: I Braked

Rob came across the stage in three strides and got both hands on Callie's wheelchair.

I hit him from the side.

We went into the podium together, and the microphone stand crashed down across the stage and screamed through the speakers.

He was stronger than he looked.

He got an elbow into my ribs and I lost my breath, and he tore past me for the phone in her lap.

"Give it to me," he said.

"No."

"Give it to me, Callie."

He had her wrist.

He twisted it, and she cried out, and the sound went through every speaker in the room.

I came up off the floor and caught him around the neck from behind and hauled him backward.

He let go.

Callie had the phone against her chest in both hands.

Rob spun around and drove his fist into my jaw.

The stage tilted, and a woman screamed in the audience.

I held onto his jacket and he hit me again, in the mouth, and I tasted blood.

"You don't get to touch her," I said.

"She's mine. She was always mine."

"She signed two hundred and fourteen wills to a man who left her in a prison."

I did not know I was shouting until I heard it come back off the walls.

Rob's face went strange.

He wrenched free, grabbed the phone out of her hands while she was looking at me, and threw it at the stage floor.

He stamped on it with his heel.

He stamped three times.

The glass went into pieces, and he stood there breathing through his teeth, looking down at it.

Then he began to laugh.
