Chapter 23: The Yellow Room
The room was at the end of the second-floor hall, behind a door Kerensa had walked past a dozen times in her first week.
She had thought it was a linen closet.
Constance turned the brass key.
"I came in every Sunday," she said. "I dusted. Gordon never asked why."
The room was small and yellow.
A white bed stood against the wall under a quilt with faded ducks on it, and a child's desk sat by the window.
On the pillow lay a stuffed rabbit with one ear.
Kerensa crossed the floor and picked it up.
It weighed almost nothing.
"This is the one Ward told everything to," she said.
"He thinks I don't know."
"You know."
"I've known for nineteen years." Constance almost smiled. "I stood outside the door and listened to a seven-year-old promise a rabbit he'd be nice."
Kerensa sat down on the bed.
She held the rabbit in her lap and ran her thumb over the place where the second ear had been.
She waited for the body's memories to rise, the way they had at the dining table.
Nothing came.
It was a stranger's room, and a stranger's rabbit.
"I don't remember it," she said.
"I didn't expect you to."
"I'm sorry."
"Don't." Constance sat beside her, the mattress giving. "You were three. You'd have kept nothing."
They were quiet.
A car went past on the street below.
"I have to ask you something," Constance said, "and you can say no."
Kerensa waited.
"Are you her?"
The question was very soft.
Kerensa kept her eyes on the rabbit.
"You've known."
"The girl we found two months ago apologized to doors and kept her eyes on the floor." Constance folded her hands. "The woman who woke up in the hospital counted the exits and looked at Gordon and judged him."
