Chapter 20: Mother
The gold ran down into the frozen ground, and a woman lay in the place where the dragon had been.
She was on her side in the trampled snow, with her knees drawn up and her hair spilled over her face.
It was long and thick, the colour of old brass, and there was grey in it.
Someone put a horse blanket over her.
It was a stable boy, no older than fourteen, and his hands shook.
I knelt and turned her over.
She was thin and pale, with lines at the corners of her eyes.
She looked like a woman of forty who had been sick for most of her life.
Her eyes opened.
They were gold, and they were mine.
"Rowan," she said, and put her hand against my cheek.
I could not speak.
By the time Linnet had come running across the yard, I was still kneeling there with my forehead against my mother's.
We took her into the stable.
There was a bunk in the harness room above the tack, where I had slept every night for twelve years.
