Chapter 14: Twenty-Six Weeks
The nurse at the triage desk was a girl I had trained, and she took one look at my face and ran for a wheelchair.
"Twenty-six weeks," she said into the phone. "Triplets. Contractions every four minutes."
My mother had come in her nightgown and her church coat.
She held my duffel bag against her chest the whole way down the hall.
They put a monitor on my belly, and three small hearts ticked out into the room, fast and stubborn.
I looked at the numbers on the screen and began to cry.
"They're fine," the doctor said. "You are not. Lie on your left side, and do not move."
They gave me a drip and a pill and a lecture, and by Sunday afternoon the fist in my belly had loosened.
The doctor said the word "stopped" and then the word "for now."
I told my mother not to call Nathan.
She called him from the hallway, and I heard her say, "She's all right, and no, you can't come in."
He did not come in.
He came as far as the corridor outside my door, and he stayed there.
At six in the evening, Ingrid Sayre knocked on the frame.
