Chapter 18: Table for Two Suspects
The detective wanted to see me at three.
Benedict cancelled a meeting with the city's tourism board to drive me.
"You don't have to come in," I said in the car.
"I'm coming in."
The station on Belmont smelled like burnt coffee and floor wax.
The detective came out to the front desk herself.
A woman in her fifties, grey bob, reading glasses pushed up on her head, a cardigan with a pen clipped to the pocket.
She looked at me. She looked at Benedict.
"You're the husband."
"Yes."
"She's not under arrest. This is a conversation. You can wait out here."
"I'd like him to stay," I said.
The detective considered that. Then she shrugged.
"He sits in the corner. He doesn't talk."
"He's very good at not talking," I said. "It's his whole thing."
Benedict sat in the corner of the interview room on a plastic chair with his coat folded on his knees.
He didn't talk.
He also didn't take his eyes off me once in two hours.
