Chapter 12: Evicting Him
Kendall stood on Renee's back porch with her hands shoved in her pink coat.
Dorothy opened the back door herself.
"You're the one who ate my stuffing," she said.
"Yes, ma'am." Kendall's chin shook. "I'm so sorry."
"Come in and sit down before you fall down."
Kendall sat at the table and put the ring on the wood, very carefully, in front of Dorothy.
"He told me it was a family piece for me. He said he'd propose in the spring."
"What did he say about Sabina?"
Kendall looked at me.
"That you were his ex-roommate who couldn't take a hint," she said. "That you kept showing up and he felt sorry for you."
Quinton made a low sound.
Dorothy picked up the ring and held it in her palm.
"It was my mother's," she said. "Thank you for bringing it back."
"There's more." Kendall's hands were shaking as she pulled out her phone. "I was in the group chat. I didn't think it was a real thing. They bet on everything."
She turned the screen toward me.
At the top was a message from Bryce, sent the Tuesday before Thanksgiving.
"She'll stand on that bridge till I call. She always blames herself first. Easiest girl alive."
Under it, two of his friends had typed laughing faces.
I read it once, and I did not cry.
I felt something much smaller and harder settle behind my ribs.
"Send me the whole chat," I said.
"Already did. I'm quitting Corvane. I'm telling HR everything on my way out."
"Good," said Renee, and handed her a coffee.
By evening there were no more phones in my life with his name on them.
I stood in Quinton's driveway after dark and closed the joint savings account from my screen.
I deleted the number he had called me from. I deleted the thread.
I put the phone in my pocket.
"You don't have to do this tonight," Quinton said from the doorstep.
"I'm not doing it. I'm done."
His house was a small brick bungalow with a porch swing and one crooked lamp.
I walked past him through the front door and stopped in the living room.
There was a couch, a bookshelf full of paperbacks, and a framed photo of the Austin baseball team in matching red caps.
"Nice place," I said.
"Thank you."
