Chapter 10: The Wine Cellar
Mirelle found Dacian in the wine cellar, because that was where the maid said he went when he was angry.
It was a long, vaulted room under the palace, lined with barrels and lit by a single hanging lamp.
He sat on an overturned cask with a bottle between his boots.
He did not look up.
"You came down here alone," he said.
"I wanted to say something."
"Say it, then."
"You kissed my best friend in front of the whole court."
"The Empress ordered a custom."
"You didn't have to do it like that."
"No." He turned the bottle in his fingers. "I didn't."
His voice was much too quiet.
She had been ready for a smile, a joke, a lazy shrug.
She had a dozen answers prepared for each of them.
She had nothing prepared for the way he looked right now, tired down to the bone.
"Why did you?" she asked.
"Because the first night," Dacian said, "you walked out of my room and into my brother's wing."
Mirelle stopped.
"I was pretending to sleep," he said. "I heard the door. I gave you a quarter of an hour and then I followed, and I stood in the shadow of the east arch and watched you walk off beside him with your shoes in your hand."
"I was lost."
"You were told to go there by something only you can see."
Her skin went cold.
"What did you say?"
"I said you chose him." His eyes lifted, amber and furious and very tired. "On the first night, with your husband asleep in your own chair, you chose my brother. And every day since, you have gone back to him, and he has let you touch him, and I have stood on a balcony and watched it."
"It's a mission," Mirelle whispered. "It isn't real."
"Nobody sleeps with the target," Dacian said.
