Chapter 8: A Kiss for the Court
Mirelle heard about "day ninety" in the dressing room, with a maid pinning her hair.
Elora told her in a whisper through the mirror, and the maid kept pinning without a flicker.
"Dacian knew the number," Elora said. "Day ninety. I never told him."
"Maybe he can read the System."
"Or maybe the System's been telling someone else things too."
They looked at each other in the glass.
Mirelle did not like how pale Elora was.
"We stick to the plan," she said. "Tonight is the Empress's banquet. We make both of them jealous in front of everyone, and we find out what they know."
"What does the plan say?"
"The plan says smile."
The banquet hall was the biggest room in the palace, with a hundred tables and a dais at the top.
Mirelle wore green velvet and the woven charm on her wrist.
She sat at the Empress's table between Aurek and a very old duke who talked about grain.
Elora sat opposite, beside Dacian, in blue.
Mirelle kept her eyes on the plate so she would not watch Elora laugh at something Dacian said.
It was not jealousy, she told herself.
It was observation.
"Princess," Aurek said, quietly. "You have not touched your food."
"The maid hasn't tasted it yet."
"She tasted it. I watched."
"Then why are you watching her?"
"Because you are my responsibility."
"I'm your brother's wife."
"I am aware."
His voice was flat.
His hand lay on the table very close to hers, and she did not move her own.
Then the Empress rose, and the hall went quiet.
"Tonight we keep the old custom," she said. "Each prince toasts the wife of his brother and seals it with a kiss. It is a sign that the brothers have no secrets from each other, and that no secret in this house is kept from the throne."
