Chapter 26: The Whole Sky

"No!" the King said.

Nobody on the wall was listening to the King.

I was standing an arm's length from Wystan.

I saw the first crossbowman sight down his bolt at Wystan's chest.

I stepped in front of him.

"Alys!" Dorrit screamed from the ropes.

The crossbows went off together.

Behind me, Wystan shifted.

He did it in the irons.

The irons had been made to hold a dragon.

Now they had one, and I heard him scream.

The black dragon came up out of him in one huge heave, and the chains to the Moot stone snapped.

His wing came down over me.

The bolts hit it.

I heard them go in, one after another, a wet sound through the hide.

Under his wing it was dark and hot and smelled of blood.

He'd folded himself round me.

One bolt came through the wing beside my face and stopped a hand's width from my eye.

"Wystan," I said.

He didn't answer.

The wing lifted.

He stood over me with bolts standing out of his wing and side, the dragon irons clamped on his legs and neck.
