After Rejection, Divorced Luna Becomes a Famous Doctor novel · Chapter 10 of 32

Chapter 10: Two Lines

By Monday there were four news vans on the corner outside Riordan's.

By Tuesday there were seven.

They parked in the bus lane and ran cables across the sidewalk.

The reporters stood in a row facing the diner window.

I hid in the back booth with my hood up.

Fergus didn't hide.

At six in the morning he walked out the front door in his apron.

He had a spatula in one hand and a full coffee pot in the other.

"Morning!" he said. "Who's cold?"

Every hand went up.

He poured coffee into every cup they had, and then went back in for paper cups and poured more.

"Is Dr. Mayhew inside?" one of them asked.

"Dr. Who?"

"Luna Mayhew. The food truck girl."

"Never heard of her." He pointed the spatula down the block. "But if you're hungry, it's two-egg special till eleven, and I don't let anybody film my eggs. They're shy."

They laughed.

Then, one by one, they came in and ordered.

By noon the diner had done three days of business in one morning, and nobody had gotten a single shot of me.

"You're a genius," I told him at the grill.

"I'm a cook." He slid a plate of plain rice and scrambled eggs in front of me. "Reporters are just hungry people with cameras. Eat."

"I can't eat eggs. The smell."

He took the eggs away without a word and brought back toast.

He always brought back toast.

Ciara came in from school at three and slapped a paper on my table.

It was from her pediatrician, printed on letterhead.

ALDOB gene test ordered. Fruit-free diet to continue. Please excuse Ciara from the school fruit program.

"She read your placemat," Ciara said. "She said whoever wrote it knows what they're doing. I said you're famous now. She said she saw."
