Chapter 28: Philadelphia or Nothing
"Wants me for what?" I said.
"She'll tell you herself. I gave her your number." He paused. "Mayhew. Whatever she offers, don't say yes on the phone. You always say yes on the phone."
He hung up.
The director called at nine.
Her voice was dry and quick and very awake.
"Dr. Mayhew. Seventy-one families in a converted shoe store. Eleven new diagnoses, three of them missed by major centers. Your follow-up rate is ninety-four percent."
"They come back for the grilled cheese."
"I don't care why they come back." Papers moved on her end. "We're opening a new center for metabolic disease next year. Clinic, lab, a family kitchen, research. We want you to lead it."
I sat very still on the couch.
The baby slept on my chest, one fist against her own cheek.
"Where?"
"Boston. Near the children's hospital. We'd move you in the summer."
She said a salary.
It was more than Emerson's offer.
"Think about it," she said. "I'll call you Monday."
Fergus was standing in the kitchen doorway with a dish towel over his shoulder.
He'd heard every word.
The apartment walls were very thin.
"Boston," he said.
"Boston."
He came and sat on the arm of the couch.
He looked at the baby, and then at me, and I watched him put his own face away so I couldn't read it.
"You should go if you want it," he said.
"Fergus."
"I mean it. This is what you were doing before all of it. Before them." He touched the baby's foot through the blanket with one finger. "Nobody gets to take this one from you. Not even me."
