Chapter 18: The Marrow Trench
The Marrow Trench began where the light gave up.
Ilsa swam down through water as black as ink, with Oren's hand locked in hers and the air pocket holding round her head.
The walls of the Trench closed in on either side, ribbed and pale.
Nothing lived there.
No fish turned in the dark, and no weed grew on the stone.
The cold came through the pocket anyway and settled in her bones.
"I know this place," she said.
Her voice sounded small.
"You have only seen the top of it," said Oren.
"Below this the walls open out."
"Stay close."
They sank for a long time.
Then the walls fell away, and she was hanging above a wide floor of white silt.
It was littered with something pale.
Her eyes took a moment to understand it.
They were bones.
Ribs and long arm bones lay half buried in the silt, and skulls rested on their sides with their jaws open.
