Chapter 20: Read It Aloud

The boots stopped at the foot of the ward, and a lantern swung up.

Calvin stood in the barn doors in his clean white coat with eight guards behind him.

He was not crying now.

He was very pale and very controlled, and he held a folded sheet of paper in one hand.

"I have an order from General Ames," he said. "Lana Orsett is to be released into my custody, together with a black ledger she stole from my laboratory."

Sixty-one patients sat up in their cots.

The camp physician stepped into the aisle in his shirtsleeves.

"No."

"Doctor, you will stand aside."

"This is my ward. She's under my care, and I will not hand a patient to a man who diluted my serum."

"You've been misled."

"I've been burning charts for you."

A murmur ran down the rows.

I came out of the isolation room with Jonas at my back and the black ledger in my hands.

Lana was sitting on her cot with her knees pulled up.

She would not look at him.

"Calvin," I said. "You came for your wife, I hope."

His eyes flicked to me, and then away.

"Nina. I'm relieved to see you well."

*She has the book. If she reads it aloud I'm finished.*

"You're relieved," I said.

"Of course."

"Then read it to me."

I held out the ledger.

"This is the method for the stock process. Page forty. Read the second step aloud so the doctor can follow it."

"I won't be mocked in front of patients."

"Nobody's mocking you. You wrote it. Read it."

"Nina, you're unwell..."

"You're the genius, Calvin. Read me one page."

He took the ledger.

He opened it, and I watched his eyes go down the lines.

They went down the page and back up, and down again.

His lips moved.

He turned a page, and turned it back, and found nothing he could say.
