Chapter 3: The Missing Twelfth Clip

Lucia's cloud trash shows the original stage video and Paulina falling on her own. The one clip that matters was wiped from inside the hospital last night.

"She's not leaving this bed," the doctor said from the doorway.

He had run down the hall after the officers, still holding Lucia's chart.

"She has acid burns and a line that was tampered with an hour ago," he said. "You can take her statement here or not at all."

The taller officer looked at the folded paper, then at the bandage.

"Ten minutes," he said, and called someone on his radio.

A detective came up in the elevator, a woman in a gray blazer who did not smile or sit down.

She read the complaint aloud.

"Paulina Ibarra says that on Saturday you shoved her off the stage at the spring party," she said. "She has a broken left wrist and four million views of the video."

"Everyone has seen the video," Lucia said. "Have you seen the original?"

The detective's pen stopped.

"There's no original. The clip was posted by a student account."

"I filmed the whole night on my phone," Lucia said. "My phone backs up to the cloud on its own. Deleted files stay in the trash for thirty days."

Last time, she had not thought of the trash until day thirty-one.

Rafael set the sealed bag on her blanket without a word.

Lucia tore it open and typed her passcode with her right hand, because her left was wrapped.

The screen opened.

Four hundred notifications, all of them cruel, and she scrolled past them without reading.

"Recently Deleted," she said, tapping.

The folder held eleven videos.

She picked the longest and held it up so the detective, Rafael and Elvira's wheelchair were all in the frame.

The video began with the stage lights.

It showed Paulina in a white dress, drunk and furious, grabbing Lucia's wrist with both hands.

It showed Lucia trying to pull free.

Then Paulina's heel caught the edge of the platform and she went over backward by herself.

She landed on her tailbone, then rolled onto her right arm.

"Her right arm," the detective said quietly.

"The complaint says left," Rafael said.

"I know what it says," the detective said.

She watched it a second time.

On the screen, Lucia was already reaching down to help Paulina up, before the cut that the viral version had made.

"The viral clip is much shorter than this one," the detective said. "Somebody trimmed out your hand coming to help her."

"Somebody trimmed out a lot," Lucia said.

Elvira's face turned toward the voice.

"Play it again for me," the old woman said.

The detective played the audio, and Elvira listened with her head tilted.

"That girl in the white dress is screaming," Elvira said. "Not afraid. Angry. She wanted her to fall, and she fell instead."

Nobody answered her.

The detective gave Lucia a long look.

"This helps you on the assault," she said. "It doesn't explain the acid, or your IV bag."

"Paulina gave the man at the library my room number," Lucia said. "And she hung the bag."

Silence.

Rafael's eyes closed for half a second.

"That's a serious accusation," the detective said. "What's your proof?"

"Look at this," Lucia said.

She opened the account page.

Under the list of her devices, a new sign-in sat at the top: Tuesday, 11:52 p.m., Brazos Memorial guest network.

The phone had been in the evidence bag at the nurses' desk at 11:52, with her name on a sticker.

"Someone logged into my account from this building," Lucia said. "They had my password."

"Who else knew it?" the detective asked.

"One person," Lucia said. "She's lived with me since August and she holds my phone while I shower."

She dragged her thumb to the bottom of the page.

At 11:53 p.m., the trash had been cleared.

The folder held eleven videos, but her upload log listed twelve.

The twelfth had been deleted at 11:53 p.m. and wiped from the trash a second later.

It had been forty seconds long.

It showed a boy in a team jacket at the spring party, bending over a first-year's drink with a pill between his fingers.

It was the only reason anyone had wanted Lucia silenced in the first place.

The detective looked at the screen.

Lucia was looking at the empty slot where the clip had been, and she did not trust her voice.

"So you have a theory and a missing file," the detective said at last. "And the file's the part that matters."

"Yes," Lucia said.

"Then find me whoever sat at that Wi-Fi at 11:52," the detective said. "I can't charge a ghost."

She turned to the officers.

"Hold the complaint," she said. "Don't serve it tonight."

Then she looked at Rafael, and her voice dropped.

"Mr. Castellanos, your family owns this wing. Every camera on this floor belongs to you."

"I'll pull them tonight," he said.

He said it before she had finished asking, and he did not look surprised.

Lucia noticed that, and filed it away with the tears he had blamed on the lights.
