Chapter 13: The Crowd on Putnam Avenue
Putnam Avenue was blocked with people before we reached it.
Russell left the station wagon on a side street, and we walked the last block together.
Ellacombe Savings stood on the corner, a limestone building with four columns and a brass plate that read 1885.
The doors were shut.
Three hundred people crowded the steps and the sidewalk, holding passbooks over their heads.
A woman in a church hat pounded on the glass with her palm.
An old man sat on the bottom step with his coat folded in his lap, staring at nothing.
"Open up!" someone shouted. "We can see you in there!"
Behind the glass, a single teller stood with her arms wrapped around herself.
A typed notice had been taped to the door below the brass plate.
I pushed forward to read it, and Russell went ahead of me, shoulders first.
The crowd gave way for his size, and then it gave way for something else.
"That's his daughter," a man said. "That's Ellacombe's girl."
The noise changed.
It went from a roar to a low, ugly murmur, and three hundred faces turned toward me.
