Chapter 6: The Harbor Ball
Table forty was wedged against the kitchen doors, and every time a waiter came through, the door hit the back of my chair.
The other seats were taken by the band's two spare horn players and a man from the valet company eating his dinner in shifts.
"You with the band?" the valet man asked me.
"No."
"Catering?"
"I'm a guest."
He looked at my dress, which was dark green silk and cost more than his car, and then at the table, and then at me with real pity.
"Somebody doesn't like you, huh."
"My sister."
"Ah." He passed me the bread. "Mine stole my truck once."
Alistair had texted at seven.
"Call from Singapore. Forty minutes. Don't start without me."
I'd written back, "I'm starting without you."
He'd sent back a single full stop, which is how he laughs in writing.
The ballroom glittered.
Three hundred people in black tie, chandeliers, a silent auction along one wall where you could bid on a week in Nantucket or a signed Bruins jersey.
Laurel was everywhere in pale pink chiffon.
She'd seated herself and Dorian and my father at table one, center front.
When the salads came out she went up on the little stage and tapped the microphone.
"Hi, everybody! Thank you so much for coming!"
Applause.
She thanked the committee and the donors and the harbor itself, and then she put her hand on her heart.
"This year has been so special for me, because I'm finally making my house a home. And because my sister is here!" She shaded her eyes and peered toward the kitchen doors. "Faye, wave!"
Three hundred heads turned.
I didn't wave.
"Faye lives in Scotland now," Laurel told the room. "She went all the way over there to get married. I guess some girls just have to go abroad to find a man who'll show up."
The laugh rolled through the room.
A waiter came through the kitchen door and hit my chair.
