Chapter 16: Hazel's Wolf

Hazel's forehead was so hot I pulled my hand back.

She lay on top of the covers in her nightgown.

Her round glasses were crooked on her nose and her brown curls were stuck to her face.

Orin stood at the head of the bed with his feet planted, and he was growling.

It was a low, steady sound, too deep for a boy of six, and he aimed it at the door.

Torin stopped in the doorway.

"Can I come in?" he said.

"Not if he growls at you," I said.

Orin growled harder.

"Orin," Torin said, without raising his voice.

"I'm not going to take her anywhere.

"I felt her from the car, and I came up the stairs as fast as I could."

My son studied his face for a long moment.

Then he stopped growling and moved one step to the side.

Torin knelt by the bed and put the back of his hand against Hazel's cheek.

"Hi, Hazel," he said.

"My bones are itchy," Hazel said in a cross, small voice.

"I know."

"And my ears are doing something."

"They are," Torin said.

"They're getting ready.

"Can you stand up, if I carry you?"

"I want Mommy."

"Mommy's right here," I said.

I gathered her up in the blanket, and she was so hot she seemed to hum.

"Garden," Torin said.

"She'll want space and cold grass.

"Inside, she'll panic.

"Outside, she'll run."

"She's six," I said.

"She's strong," he said.

"Look at her."

I looked, and under the skin of my daughter's arm something moved and settled.

We carried her out the back door and down the steps to the lodge garden.

The grass was still wet from the night and the pines went up on three sides.

Orin walked beside us with his book in one hand.

I did not know why he had brought it.

I put Hazel down on the grass and knelt at her head.

Torin knelt at her feet.

The baker stood on the porch with both hands over her mouth, and I called out to her to go inside and shut the door.

She did, and for once she asked me nothing.

"Listen to me, Hazel," Torin said.

"When it comes, you won't like it.

"It comes up from your back first, and then your legs, and then your face.

"Don't fight it.
