Chapter 14: Leofric's Writ
The council chamber held forty lords, and all of them were already seated when Linnea walked in.
She wore the grey gown with her hair still loose, and Aldric walked half a step behind her, which every lord noticed.
Leofric stood at the head of the long table with a rolled parchment in both hands.
"Cousin," he said warmly. "Duchess. Forgive the hour."
"Read it," Aldric said.
"I would rather you did."
He unrolled the writ and set it before them.
It was a single page in Aldric's square hand, with the ducal seal pressed in red wax at the foot.
Linnea read it once, and her stomach went cold.
It named Leofric Aldwin guardian of the heir and regent of Skarreth until the child came of age.
It also named the duchess a ward of the steward's household through her confinement, under his care and his lock.
