Chapter 19: The Proxy
The board's pre-gala dinner was the Tuesday before the fourteenth, in a private room off the Merriam's lobby.
I was not on the guest list.
I was on the seating chart, because I had made it.
I had put the oldest man on the board at the end of the table nearest the door.
He was seventy-eight, a retired surgeon with white hair and a cane, and he had sat on the Sorrell board for thirty-one years.
He had also been at the hospital the week of the fire.
I stood in the doorway with a place card in my hand, and I waited until he reached for his cane.
"Doctor," I said. "May I have five minutes before dessert?"
He looked at the card, then at my face.
"You're the girl on the steps," he said.
"Yes, sir."
"You did that well."
"Thank you. I need your help, and I don't have anything to offer for it but the truth."
"That is generally the whole price," said the surgeon.
