Chapter 6: Trespass

The wind off the lake cut through my blazer.

Thirty people in white stood on the sidewalk with their phones up, and Chantal stood in front with a bullhorn pointed at my face.

"There she is!" she shouted. "The homewrecker!"

I walked straight up to her and stopped an arm's length away.

I looked into her phone, because that was where the four thousand people were.

"Hello," I said. "I'm Ingrid Eklund."

Chantal lowered the bullhorn an inch.

"The police have the whole chat tonight, and Lane's name is on the instructions."

"Anyone who wants their name off that list can leave now."

"That's edited!" Chantal yelled.

"Then post the original."

She opened her mouth, and nothing came out.

Behind her, a girl in white quietly lowered her banner and stepped away from the group.

Then another girl did, and then a boy.

"This building asked you twice to leave," I said. "You're all on private property. The police are on the way."

"You called the police again?" Lane said, pushing forward, still holding the roses. "Ingrid, for God's sake. We're married. She's not going to jail for a joke."

"Not for the joke. For trespass."

"I'm warning you."

He took my wrist.

It wasn't hard, but it was fast, and it was Lane's hand, the hand that had held mine at four hundred dinners, pulling me back from the camera and toward the curb.

"You're done," he said, low. "Come on. Walk with me and we'll talk."

"Let go."

"Stop making a scene."

A shadow crossed us.

Tobias did not shout, and he did not hurry, and he simply stood between us.

He took Lane's wrist and lifted it off mine, one finger at a time.

"That's the last time," he said.
