Angelo was dressed before the call ended.
"I know where they took him," he said, lacing his boots.
"How?"
"There's only one place in this city Paulie trusts to make things disappear." He looked at me. "I burned the tapes there."
The concrete yard by the river.
The black barrel by the fence.
"I'm coming."
"Your exam is at one o'clock."
"Then we'd better be quick."
He stopped with one boot half laced.
"Promise me something," I said. "Nobody dies tonight. Not even them."
"I made that promise eight years ago," he said. "The morning after the dock. I've kept it every day since."

The welterweight and the cook were waiting on the corner of Ritner in the cook's van.
