Chapter 28: The Will
Pietro was standing at the head of the walnut when they walked in.
"The heir hasn't come," he was saying. "By our law, a man who won't sit at his own confirmation has no claim."
Every head turned.
Vin was barefoot in a coat with nothing under it, blood drying over one eye.
Mickey was in his sweater and Vin's other coat, with snow melting in his hair.
Along the wall, where the women stand, Nonna sat in a chair with her cane and her prayer book.
Aoife stood beside her with their dad's tool roll in both arms.
Shawn was behind them, gray in the face.
And in the doorway to the dining room stood the detective, in his raincoat, with his reading glasses on their cord.
Pietro didn't miss a beat.
"Vincenzo. You're late."
"You chained me to a pillar," Vin said.
The room made a sound.
"He's confused," Pietro said gently. "He's been drinking with the omega."
"The vault's awake," Mickey said, to all of them. "Come and watch."
They came.
