Chapter 7: The Cabin on the Ridge

Kellan didn't answer his aunt.

He put his beer on the rail and said, "Supper's over," in a voice like a closing gate.

Then he walked down the porch steps into the dark.

Nobody stopped him.

Forty people stared at their plates.

"Well," Mabel said, and sat back down in her rocking chair. "Somebody pass the corn."

I made it through another twenty minutes of that porch.

I don't remember any of it.

Ridley left without another word, and every wolf on the hill watched him go and then looked at me with a new kind of attention.

Mom drove me home with both hands locked on the wheel.

"You are not to go out tonight," she said.

"I won't."

"I mean it."

"I won't, Mom."

I meant it too.

At ten o'clock I was lying on my bed in my underwear with a fan on my skin and my teeth clenched against the pain.

At eleven the heat peaked.

I've tried to explain it since, and the best I can do is this.

Imagine every part of you that ever wanted anything, turned all the way up, and pointed at one man.

I was sobbing into my pillow.

My hips moved on the sheets and I couldn't stop them.

My wolf clawed the inside of my chest and howled, and the howl came out of my mouth, thin and cracked, into the quiet room.

Somewhere below me my mother said, "Oh, honey."

Then I heard her put the kettle on, because she did not know what else to do.

At eleven-forty something thudded on the porch roof.

I lifted my head.

The window slid up.

Kellan climbed in, filling the whole frame, and he looked wrecked.

His shirt was open.

His hair was wet and loose and his eyes were fully gold.

"I can't," he said, and his voice was gravel.

"I tried. I walked to the ridge and back. I sat in the creek. I can't do it."

"Then stop trying."

"Everly."

"Kellan, come here."

He came.

He crossed the room in one stride and went to his knees at the side of my bed and pressed his forehead against my stomach.
