Chapter 7: Not Under My Roof

Mom looked at the shirt.

Then past me, at Tate asleep on the rug with the TV still glowing blue.

Then at my hair, loose, with no clip in it.

Her face did something I'd never seen it do.

"Oh, Lainey," she said. "Oh, no."

"Mom, it's not..."

"In front of the twins?" Her voice climbed. "You let them walk in on this?"

"They knocked on a door. I opened it."

My sister pushed past me into the condo.

"Tate! We brought muffins!"

Tate sat up on the rug. His hair stood straight up on one side.

"Hey, bug," he croaked. "What time is it?"

"Muffin time," said my brother, and climbed on him.

Mom grabbed my arm and pulled me into the hall. She shut the door to a crack.

"Doug said you were obsessed with him," she whispered. "I told him he was being cruel. I defended you."

"He was coming off the shots. He was sick all night. I stayed so he wouldn't be alone."

"In his shirt."

"Mine was soaked from putting cold cloths on him."

"People already think..." She pressed her fingers to her mouth. "There's a picture, Lainey. And now my children see their sister in their brother's clothes at seven in the morning."

"Mom. I'm twenty-nine years old."

"I know how old you are."

"Then hear me. Nothing happened."

She looked at me hard.

I'm a terrible liar. I always have been. So I told the truth.

"Yet," I said.

Mom stepped back.

From inside the condo came the clang of a pan and Tate's voice, perfectly calm.

"Okay. Who wants pancakes?"

Two voices screamed yes.
