Chapter 21: The Board

The boardroom of the Providence Arts Hall had a table long enough to land a plane on.

At nine o'clock on Monday morning, a dozen people sat around it.

I stood at the foot in my mother's navy dress with my tool roll at my feet.

I had brought it on purpose.

It reminded them what I was there for.

Pearl sat in the gallery chair by the wall in a gold sequin cardigan.

Her hearing aids were turned all the way up, and she held a roll of butterscotch candies in her fist.

Bram stood against the back wall with his hands in his pockets.

I had asked him not to speak, and he'd said "Understood" and meant it.

At the head of the table sat Cecily in pearls and charcoal, with her lawyer at her elbow and her chignon.

"We are here," she said, in her level voice, "to consider the conduct of a contractor."

"Ms. Spalding deceived this institution, in public, at its signature event."

"Her contract has already been terminated for cause. Today the board will ratify that and strike her from the roster."
