Chapter 6: Last Lecture

Thursday night, Brandon and Candice sat in the front row.

They had never sat in the front row in their lives.

I took my seat in row two, seat fourteen, and Maddie slid in beside me with a coffee the size of her head.

"Don't look at the professor," Maddie whispered. "You'll set the hall on fire."

"I'm not looking at him."

"You've been looking at him since he walked in."

I was.

Geoffrey stood at the podium in the white shirt again, sleeves pushed to his elbows, and he did not look at me once.

He lectured on incentives for fifty minutes.

He was good at it, which I had not expected and did not enjoy.

He used a coffee shop for his examples, and a cousin who borrowed money, and the room laughed and leaned in without knowing it.

At a quarter to nine, he capped his marker.

"Last lecture," he said. "I'll take questions."

Hands went up all over the hall, and he answered them one by one in that low, even voice.

Brandon's hand went up last.

Geoffrey looked at him a long second.

"Brandon."

Brandon stood.

"Professor Ames," he said, loud enough for the back rows. "Say a man has something that isn't his. A car, say. What incentive stops him from taking it?"

Candice put a hand on his sleeve, and he shook it off.

A few people laughed, uncertainly.

Maddie grabbed my wrist.

"Nothing stops a man from taking what isn't his," Geoffrey said. "The incentive is to give it back."
