Chapter 23: The Lantern Ball
The Lantern Ball came back to the Aldous Hotel a year later, and this time nobody wore a mask.
Paper lanterns hung over the terrace in long glowing rows.
Constance Pendelton was serving eight years in a state prison, and Dr. Lyle had pleaded guilty in the spring.
The Foundation's new board ran the Ball now, and half the guests were nurses.
I stood at the ballroom door in a green dress.
Dee had sewn it herself, in the bakery's back room, out of six yards of silk and a great deal of cursing.
"Do not spin," she said, pinning the last flower to my shoulder. "You're five months along, and I used every inch."
"I'm not going to spin."
"You have the face of a woman who's going to spin."
I put a hand on my stomach.
The baby kicked once, hard.
"She's got your opinions," said Nathaniel's voice, behind me.
I turned.
He wore a black tuxedo and no mask and no cap.
His hair was combed, and he stood very straight.
He looked like a man trying to remember a speech.
"You look," he said. "I don't."
