Chapter 45: Eleventh Sunday
Angelo didn't say a word about the hearing for five days.
On Sunday evening he stood just inside the door of room 1412 with the five plates laid behind him.
His hands were shut.
"I'm angry," he said. "I'm here. I need you all to hear it, and I'm not leaving."
Lourdes looked up from the head of the table.
"Say it, anak."
"You sat in the car."
Nobody breathed.
"Six hours. He asked for you, and you were fifty feet from his room. You could have gotten out and walked past her." His voice cracked on it. "You could have walked in, Mama, and you sat in the car."
Tomas put his fork down.
Lourdes folded her napkin.
It took her a long time.
"Yes," she said.
"That's all?"
"I have known it for six years." She laid the napkin beside her plate. "I did not know he had asked until Noelle told me. But I have known since that night that the door was open and I did not go through it."
"Why not?"
"Because you had told me to go."
"I was twenty-four."
"And I was fifty-two, and a grown woman.
"I had no right to need a boy's permission to walk into a hospital." She held his eyes. "That was my mistake. It belongs to me. I will not give it to you, or to her, or to your father."
