Chapter 10: Her Father's Desk
"Then say it," Amos said.
The rain had thinned to a drizzle, and the pullout smelled of wet gravel.
"Not here," I said. "Take me home."
"Home."
"My father's study."
He studied my face.
I don't know what he saw there, but he started the truck.
My father's study was at the back of the ranch house, a square room with a rolltop desk and a shelf of cattle journals.
A photograph of my mother on a horse hung over the desk.
I had not opened its door since the funeral.
I opened it now and pulled him in by the shirt and shut it behind us.
The light through the window was grey and soft.
On the desk was my father's coffee cup full of pencils, every one of them chewed and rubbed to a stub.
I took off my coat and let it fall.
"Here?" Amos said. "In his room?"
"He's gone. I'm not. Lock it."
He turned the key.
I unzipped my dress and let it slide to the floor.
I took off my bra and my torn tights and stood in the study in nothing, with my braid down my back.
