Chapter 9: The Truck
The rain hit the windshield so hard that Amos pulled off onto the gravel pullout by the river and cut the engine.
We had been to the courthouse in Missoula that morning to file my notice against the Colby lease.
I was still in the green wool dress I'd worn for the clerk.
He'd driven the whole way back without a word.
"You didn't answer me last night," I said.
"No."
"Why not?"
He stared out at the river.
"Because I haven't got one."
The rain drummed on the roof.
The windows had fogged, and the river was a grey smear beyond them.
I unbuckled my seatbelt.
"Arvidson," he said.
"I'm not done asking."
He let out a breath that was almost a laugh.
I climbed across the bench seat.
He didn't stop me.
I put one knee on either side of his thighs, with the steering wheel against my back, and sat down in his lap.
His hands came up to my waist and stayed there, spread wide.
"I should drive you home," he said.
"The rain's too heavy."
"I'm a liar, you said."
I smiled at him.
"You are."
I took his hat off and set it on the dash.
