Chapter 8: Calving Night
At two in the morning somebody threw gravel at my window.
I had been awake anyway, lying under my old quilt, going over the creek.
I opened the sash.
Amos stood in the yard in the dark with a flashlight pointed at his boots.
"First-calf heifer," he said, low. "Backwards, and she's stuck. I can't turn it alone."
"Give me two minutes."
I pulled on jeans and my father's barn coat and met him at the porch.
Neither of us said a word about the creek.
The calving barn was warm and yellow and smelled of straw, iodine and a lot of afraid animal.
The heifer lay in the end stall on her side, groaning.
A pair of small hooves stuck out of her, soles up.
"Hind legs," I said. "It's coming breech."
"It's not going anywhere without help."
He rolled up his sleeve to the shoulder and knelt in the straw.
I took the chains from the nail.
I had done this more times than I could count, and I knew what it needed.
