Chapter 9: What You Do When You're Not Teaching

Abram's POV

I let her sleep until seven.

I stood in the shower with both hands braced on the tile and tried to be sorry I'd broken my rule.

I couldn't manage it.

Every Saturday for three weeks I had told myself I was teaching her, and last night she had stood in the rain and told me I was lying.

I dressed, went down the iron stairs, and found Lise in the main room with a coffee and a letter on the bar.

She didn't ask where I'd slept.

"Sheldon's lawyer wrote," she said. "He wants reinstatement."

I stopped on the last stair.

"He was banned two years ago."

"His lawyer says there was no formal finding, so he's entitled to an appeal before the membership committee." Her hand was perfectly steady on the cup. "He's using the word defamation."

"Then let him use it."

"Abram."

She set the letter down.

"He's been at that woman's building. He sat at her brunch table. He's circling her because he knows she's yours, and if he gets back through that door he's going to tell her a story about you, and about me."

"I'll tell her the truth first."

"Will you?"

I didn't answer.

She looked at me for a long time.

"You haven't told her anything," Lise said quietly. "You let her think I sent her because I felt sorry for her."

"You did feel sorry for her."

"That's not why."

I didn't deny it.

Lise had handed Joss that card on her own, and I had never asked her to.

"Not yet," I said. "She's three weeks in. If I tell her now, she'll run to him to ask him his side, and he'll have it ready."

"And if she finds out some other way?"
