Chapter 21: Mrs. Hargrove on Forty-One
I told him I'd think about it, and he said, "That's fair," and fell asleep with his boots still in his hand.
On Monday night, at five to nine, the basement break room was full.
Thirty-one people in gray smocks sat on folding chairs, holding paper cups, looking at me.
Rhoda stood by the coffee urn with her arms crossed.
"Well, Mrs. Hargrove," she said. "You called the meeting."
"I did."
"Some of us have a cart on forty."
"This is about the carts," I said.
I climbed onto a chair.
It's a habit now.
"I went to see the chairwoman this morning," I said. "I took a list."
A low murmur.
"Health insurance for every person in this room. Not the thirty-hour cut, the real kind. Dental. Sick days that don't come out of your pay."
"A raise that is actually a raise."
"And a say in your own schedule, so nobody gets moved to the forty-fourth floor because one woman felt like it."
