Chapter 22: The Toast

Nobody at the table said anything for a second.

"Our big family news," my father read out loud, with his glasses on the end of his nose. "What's the big family news?"

"The engagement," Coby said. "She wants me to stand up in front of four hundred people and say I'm happy about it."

"Are you going to?" I asked.

He turned the phone face down.

"I don't know yet."

"You don't have to do anything," I said. "Not for her, and not for me. You hear me? Go, eat the steak, sit down."

"I hear you."

He went up to bed without saying good night.

On Friday afternoon Jarrod sent a car for Coby.

A black town car, with a driver in a cap.

Coby came down the stairs in a new navy suit his father had sent him, and a tie he couldn't knot.

I knotted it on the landing.

My hands remembered how. They'd done it for every crew banquet since he was twelve.

"You look like a senator," my father said.

"Is that good?"

"No."

Coby got in the car and rolled down the window.

"See you there," he said, and then the car was gone.
