Chapter 18: The Lake
The doctor gave her two hours and a lecture, in that order.
"Two hours," she said, looking at Colin and not at Angie.
"A wheelchair, a blanket, and your phone on. If she goes grey, you call me."
"We'll call you," Colin said.
"I'm going on my feet," Angie said.
"You're going in the chair."
"Fine. To the car."
Dixon drove, because Colin's hands were not quite steady.
He parked at the top of the lakefront in Evanston, where the road ended at a split-rail fence and a strip of dead grass.
Snow lay in the lee of every bench.
Below the fence, the lake path ran along the water, a narrow line of packed white between the beach and the bluff.
Out past the rocks, the lake had frozen in grey ridges, and the wind came off it.
Dixon cut the engine.
"I'll be here," he said. "Heater on. Radio low. Anything goes wrong, you wave."
"Nothing is going to go wrong," Angie said.
"Wave anyway."
She opened her door.
The cold hit her teeth.
It was ten degrees, and her coat was too big, and she stood on the gravel in it and looked down the path.
