Chapter 21: The Prince Kneels
At dawn the Jade Stairs were full to the cloud floor.
Qinghe had not asked for it.
The word had gone through Heaven in an hour, and the Court stood on every landing in white and gold, nine thousand and more.
Above them the Heaven Mirror hung bare again, its cloth gone, its bronze face turned to every realm.
She came down the first steps with Jinye's hand in hers.
On the four hundred and fiftieth step Yan Chenxi knelt with his forehead on the jade.
He had taken off the Heir's gold crown, and it lay on the stone in front of his hands.
Below him on the stairs, far down, a small figure in white swept the steps with a broom, and did not look up.
Qinghe stopped three steps above the Prince.
"Rise," she said. "Or stay down. I do not care. Say what you came to say."
He did not rise.
"I discarded you," he said to the stone. "I did it in front of every person in this Court."
His voice carried, flat and clear, because the whole stairway had gone silent.
"I have told Heaven that the Trial emptied me, and that was true. But I was the one who held the Blade."
A murmur ran down the landings.
