Chapter 12: Day One

I walked out of the council chamber with my father's voice behind me, and I did not turn around.

Tullio called my name in the hall.

I raised one hand without looking back, and he stopped.

Raimondo caught up with me in the courtyard.

"Nerina."

"Don't," I said.

I reached the car he had sent for me and put my hand on the door.

"It's day two," he said. "You get one question, and I owe you an answer."

I turned to face him.

"You owed me that answer on day one."

He took it without moving.

"We set the rule at the docks," I said. "Nobody lies, nobody takes a night off. I asked you why the elder filed the removal with your office, and you gave me half a sentence."

"I swore an oath."

"You swore it before you met me. Then you made a different oath to me, and you chose the old one."

"Yes."

"You let me sit in that house and not know why my father kept looking at the door. You let me walk into a room set for my own engagement."

"I wasn't in the room," he said.

"You knew the room existed."

"I did." His grey eyes held mine. "I'm not going to tell you I didn't."

I opened the car door and shut it again.

My hands were not steady, and I put them in my jacket pockets.

"Last night," I said. "You knew then. You were in your own house with a woman you knew was in a treaty with you, and you asked me whether I wanted you."

"I asked because it was the one question I could ask that was only mine."

"And I answered it in the dark with my mouth on yours, while you knew the rest."

His face did not change, but a muscle moved in his jaw.

"Yes."

"Do you know what that feels like to me?"

"Tell me."

"Like being a clause," I said. "Like everyone in my life read a page I never got to see."
