Chapter 18: The Cardigan

Delaney Rayburn made bail on Wednesday afternoon, and by four o'clock she was in the lobby of Lenhart Tower.

She wore a plain gray coat and dark glasses, and nobody who had seen the stream would have taken her for the woman in the cream suit.

The doorman stepped in front of her.

"Ma'am, you can't be here."

"I need to see Cora." Her voice cracked. "Please. Just five minutes."

Phones came up around the lobby, one after another.

A delivery boy at the desk held his out at arm's length and started filming.

"She isn't receiving," the doorman said.

"I'll wait."

"Ma'am."

"Let her wait," said a voice from the elevators.

Cora came across the marble in a white shirt and dark trousers, with a paper bag swinging from her hand.

She had known Delaney would come, because Delaney always came when she was cornered.

She had kept the bag by the door for three days.

Delaney took off her glasses.

Her eyes were swollen, and for the first time since Cora had known her, her hair was not done.

"Cora," she said. "Thank you."

"I haven't said anything yet."

"I know. I know what I did." The words came out in a rush. "But I gave them the recordings. All of them. Every call with Brooks. The state's attorney says my cooperation matters. If you speak for me, if you tell the judge I helped, they might drop the forgery charge down to something small."

"Small."

"It's a felony, Cora. I'd lose my license, and I'd never work again."

Cora tilted her head.

"I'd like to understand this," she said. "You ask me to be kind to you."
