Chapter 10: The Owner
I got out of bed and put on the red dress.
At four o'clock the car dropped me at the Hale Grand.
The doorman held the door.
"Good afternoon, Mrs. Langley."
He'd been told. All the staff had, that morning.
Not one of them had told the bride.
The Grand Ballroom was full of white orchids and gold chairs.
Three hundred guests. A string quartet. A twelve-foot train on its way down the aisle.
A girl with a clipboard checked my name at the door.
She frowned at her list.
"Rebecca Langley. You're at table thirty-one."
Table thirty-one was in the back corner, next to the swinging kitchen doors.
The other chairs were taken by a bus driver Kristen had dated in high school, and two of Trevor's cousins nobody talked to.
Every time a waiter came through, the door bumped my chair.
So much for a place at the front.
My mother was in the first row, in lavender silk.
She turned around once, found me, and gave me a little wave.
