Chapter 32: June Twelfth
I thought about it for a long time, standing on that cold concrete.
I'd spent fifteen June twelfths in the pit room at Kilgore's.
Darrell had never once remembered the date before Doreen reminded him.
"I want to get up at four," I said. "And light a fire. Because I feel like it, and not because anybody's waiting on me."
"That's it?"
"That's all I've got so far."
He pulled me in against his coat.
"That's a good start," he said.
At four in the morning on June twelfth, I was standing in the pit house in the dark.
Nobody was waiting on an order from Kerrville.
I'd woken at 3:40 on my own and listened to the river a while.
Then I'd gotten up because I wanted to.
Deke had built every inch of it with the twins and the river people over the winter.

The two old brick pits stood side by side in the middle.
I split the first piece of post oak with my own axe, sharpened this time.
